What Is Kilsaran QP10 Quartz Primer Used For?
Kilsaran KPRO Façade QP10 Quartz Primer is a ready-to-use primer that prepares walls for thin-layer renders, putties and paints. It is a dispersion of synthetic resins with fine quartz aggregates, which increase bond strength and leave the surface rough and scratch resistant.
QP10 makes thin-coat renders easier to apply on smooth substrates. The priming layer increases the adhesion of the render, and its uniform, highly opaque finish prevents shadowing showing through the top coat. It can be tinted to match the render colour, which Kilsaran recommends when using QP10 under a thin-coat render.
It is the primer specified by Kilsaran for concrete and reinforced basecoats before KPRO SR 1.5 Silicone Render and KPRO S-SR 1.5 Silicate-Silicone Render, including on external wall insulation (EWI) systems.
Key Properties of QP10
- Quartz primer for thin-coat renders, putties and paints
- Increases bond strength and makes thin renders easier to apply
- Prevents shadowing thanks to a uniform, highly opaque finish
- Waterproof and vapour permeable (breathable)
- Internal and external use
- Can be tinted to suit the render colour
- Ready to use, applied by roller or brush
- Covers approx. 30–50m² per 15kg bucket
- Supplied in a 15kg bucket made from 100% recycled plastic
Suitable Substrates
QP10 can be applied to internal and external walls including reinforced basecoats, traditional cement-based render, plasterboard, concrete and strongly bonded paint coats.
Highly absorbent substrates such as gypsum plasters, chipboard and non-impregnated gypsum board should first be treated with a liquid suction control primer and left to dry for approximately 2 hours before applying QP10.
How to Apply QP10
- The surface must be smooth, even, dry and free from grease, bitumen, dust and weak or dirty coats; remove existing adhesive or lime paint coatings and fill any defects
- Stir the contents of the bucket before use
- Do not dilute the primer
- Apply in a single even layer by roller or brush
- Allow approx. 2–3 hours drying time before rendering
- Clean tools and fresh stains with water
Apply at ambient and substrate temperatures between +5°C and +25°C with humidity below 80%. Do not use rusty containers or tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a primer before silicone render?
Yes. Kilsaran specifies QP10 Quartz Primer on concrete and reinforced basecoats before applying KPRO silicone and silicate-silicone renders. Tinting it to the render colour is recommended.
How much does a 15kg bucket of QP10 cover?
At a consumption of 0.3–0.5 kg/m², one 15kg bucket covers approximately 30–50m², depending on how smooth and absorbent the substrate is.
Can QP10 be diluted?
No. QP10 is ready to use and should not be diluted.
What is the difference between QP10 and QPX?
QP10 primes surfaces before thin-coat renders, putties and paints. KPRO QPX Bonding Primer is a bonding primer for difficult absorbent and non-absorbent surfaces such as tiles, steel and glass, and a base for cement-based renders like KPRO GP Render and UNO.
